Big Rig Truck Kills 2 in Highway Accident

March 06, 2008 04:59 PM

Authorities have released the identity of a Clairemont couple who died when their car plowed into a jackknifed big rig on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley and burst into flames.

The tractor-trailer veered out of control near Hotel Circle, struck a median wall and skidded to a halt across four of the five westbound freeway lanes about 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

About a minute later, a 2004 Kia Amanti driven by a 64-year-old Frank Leon Bilyeu smashed into the stalled commercial vehicle at high speed and burst into flames, CHP public affairs Officer Brad Baehr said.
Bilyeu and his wife, 59-year-old Shirley Estelle Bilyeu, died at the scene, a coroner official said, adding that the two had to be identified through dental records.

The driver of the big rig, 38-year-old Abukar Suri Ali of Greensboro, N.C., and a 27-year-old San Diego man riding with him were uninjured.
The trucker told investigators he lost control of the semitrailer when he swerved to avoid an animal on the freeway, Baehr said.

The accident left several lanes of the interstate blocked for about three and a half hours.

Santa Clarita Truck Accident in Tunnel - Trucking Accident in Los Angeles

October 14, 2007 11:27 AM

On Friday October 12th, at least five big rigs were involved in a serious accident in Santa Clarita, California just 30 minutes north of downtown Los Angeles. While the cause of the accident is still under investigation, the Associated Press is reporting that several passenger vehicles were involved as well, with at least 3 deaths and 10 injuries. Trucking accidents remain some of the most dangerous accidents throughout California.

The pileup in a freeway tunnel resulted in an explosion which has had the 5 freeway shutdown since the accident.

Firefighters, police and rescue workers were still searching for victims on Sunday morning. Fire investigators said they suspect that two big rigs or tractor trailers crashed and burst into flames in the tunnel. Several passengers traveling in their cars were able to get out of the tunnel without any injuries.

It has been reported that the tunnel where the accident occurred is one of the most dangerous areas of the freeway because of the darkness and curves uncharacteristic of tunnels. Interstate 5 remains closed on Sunday.

Every day, thousands of victims are injured in a truck accident or truck involved accident on the freeways and streets. Los Angeles in particular remains home to the largest seaport (Long Beach) which means there are more trucks on the freeways, highways and streets throughout Southern California transporting goods than most other cities or states.

Accidents involving large trucks result in some of the most horrific injuries. Broken bones, amputations, brain damage and even deaths have resulted from accidents involving large commercial trucks and passenger vehicles.

Since the weight and speeds of trucks triple and quadruple those of the standard vehicles on the freeways, the majority of the damage and force is placed upon the smaller cars and their passengers.

Trucking accidents can often result in reckless truck driving, inattentive drivers, road construction and road hazards, defective brakes or other defective truck parts, tunnel construction, explosions as a result of transporting hazardous materials and other dangerous activities or reckless driving.

The freeways in Los Angeles County include: 5 freeway, 110 freeway, 405 freeway, 10 freeway, 101 freeway, 134 freeway, 118 freeway, 23 freeway, 14 freeway, 15 freeway, 73 freeway. These highways can be dangerous when trucks 10 times the average passenger car either drive recklessly or behave poorly as a result of unsafe lane changes, tailgating, inattentiveness, sleep deprivation, intoxication or any other negligent behaviors.

Employers of truck drivers are also required to properly and effectively hire individuals that are qualified to drive large commercial trucks. An attorney can properly evaluate who is liable in your case.

California Truck Accidents Attorney - Law Firm

Driving down the Los Angeles freeways (405, 5, 101, 10, 605) this past weekend, one thing became very clear: the possibility of a collision with a large commercial truck such as an 18-wheeler, semi-truck, container truck or any other over-sized truck is very real.

These types of vehicles are often 5 times the size of the Hummer (one of the largest passenger vehicles on our roads) and weight up to 50 tons. A crash between your average car on the freeway and one of these trucks can be life threatening.

An accident with a large truck, 18-wheeler, semi-truck, or any other oversized truck that may be carrying commercial or hazardous materials for transportation may be one of the most serious types of motor vehicle accidents on the roads today.

The Department of Transportation reported that there were 12,389 Large Trucks Involved in Non-Fatal crashes in California in 2006. The National total was 129,494 Non-Fatal crashes of large trucks.

These trucks can be divided into three categories: Light, Medium and Heavy. The Light trucks are defined as those trucks weighing less than 13,000lbs. Some pick-up trucks fall under this category. The Medium Trucks weight between 13,000lbs. – 30,000lbs. Fire trucks, garbage trucks and various construction trucks may fall under this category. Heavy trucks are the heaviest and largest that the law allows on the roads. The maximum weight of a heavy truck is 50 tons.

“Collision with motor vehicle in transport” was recorded as the most harmful event for 79 percent of the large trucks involved in fatal crash.

I found these statistics quite interesting:
• Over the past 20 years (from 1981 to 2001) there has been a 37-percent increase in registered large trucks and a 91-percent increase in miles traveled by large trucks.
• Over the same time period, the number of large trucks involved in fatal crashes each year has declined by 8 percent, and the vehicle involvement rate for large trucks in fatal crashes has declined by 52 percent.
• Over the past 10 years (from 1991 to 2001) there has been a 27-percent increase in registered large trucks and a 39-percent increase in miles traveled by large trucks.
• The number of large trucks involved in injury crashes each year has increased by 15 percent over the past 10 years, and the vehicle involvement rate for large trucks in injury crashes has declined by 17 percent.
• The number of large trucks involved in property damage only crashes has increased by 35 percent over the past 10 years, but the vehicle involvement rate for large trucks in property damage only crashes has declined by 3 percent.
• Alcohol involvement (blood alcohol concentration of 0.01 gram per deciliter [g/dl] or more) for large truck drivers in fatal crashes has declined by 75 percent since 1982, the first year of FARS data for alcohol involvement in fatal crashes.
Many things can be the cause of a trucking accident in Los Angeles, CA. Most truck accidents are a result of driver related issues such as: running off the road, driving too fast for the conditions, driving in excess of posted speed limit, failure to yield right of way, failure to keep in proper land, inattentive (cell phone), failure to obey traffic signs, erratic or reckless driving, obscured vision by weather conditions, non-moving traffic violations, drowsiness and fatigue, overcorrecting, operating without proper equipment, making improper turns, following too closely, swerving, backing improperly, stopped in roadway, and vision problems.

The largest heavy truck manufacturers in the world include: Daimler-Chrysler, Volvo, PACCAR, Navistar, MAN, Scania, Hino Motors, Iveco, Nissan Diesel and Volkswagen.

Since trucking accidents in Los Angeles, California may be complex and potentially devastating, it is important to speak with an experienced a
