Eating at restaurants is one of the most common activities people do everyday. Unfortunately, food poisoning can be a common occurrence among many of the restaurants in California.

While there is not one single cause of food poisoning, it can be attributed to many factors including: contaminated foods, poor sanitation, undercooked or under-prepared foods, bacteria, viruses, parasites, pesticides or other toxic or infectious agents. Most food poisoning cases are a result of bacteria like Staphylococcus or E. Coli.

Often times, food poisoning is the result of poor sanitation when a food handler, cook or chef does not wash their hands after using the restrooms, or has a contagious infection which is then transferred to the meats or vegetables that are served.

In most cases, food poisoning may cause a high fever, chills, diarrhea, nausea, cramping, vomiting, or in rare cases even death.

Food poisoning can occur at all types of restaurants including fast food restaurants, sushi restaurants, hospital cafeterias, cruise-line or cruise ship foods, hotel restaurants, buffets, school cafeterias and other places that serve meals.

If you or a loved one has suffered from food poisoning, it is important to seek immediate medical attention for possible dehydration and other bacterial or viral infections that may arise. You may also have legal rights and the right to seek compensation for your damages such as lost wages, medical expenses and medical bills, pain and suffering and punitive damages.
