Tort Reform: Real Reform or Rhetoric?

November 18, 2006 11:22 AM

Professor Posner wrote a very interesting article on Tort "Reform" which makes for a good read. Please spend some time learning about Tort "Reform" as this will be another hot topic during the 2008 Presidential Elections.

Iranian-American UCLA Student Tasered

November 17, 2006 07:55 AM

My Letter to the UCLA Police Chief (PDF)

Mostafa Tabatabainejad, a UCLA student was shocked several times by campus police for refusing to show his school ID to community patrol officers.

The video above has shocked the community, me included. While it is critical for campus police to ensure the safety of its students, I question using a stun gun on anyone who has been handcuffed and is on the ground. I also question officers continued demand that Tabatabainejad stand up after he had been stunned. It is well known that the use of a Taser-gun results in temporary muscle collapse and too often death. How could he get up?

Above is a link to a letter I wrote to the Chief of UCLA Police where I have demanded the following:

• Immediate suspension of all UCLA Officers involved
• A complete, thorough and INDEPENDENT investigation into the events leading up to the incident
• A complete, thorough and INDEPENDENT investigation into why the victim was repeatedly and unnecessarily stunned

Here is the UCLA Police Department contact information:

National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week - Nov 12th - 18th

November 12, 2006 09:36 PM

While most of us prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving next week, this week we will be observing National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (Nov. 12th – 18th). The purpose of this observance is to bring our communities closer to the realities of abject poverty and homelessness. Non-profit organizations and volunteers nationwide will be participating in various activities to bring greater awareness, educate and help promote our national duty to help end hunger and homelessness.

Today, it is estimated that there are 350,000 homeless here in California and 80,000 in Los Angeles County alone. The reality is that there is no one formula that causes homelessness and therefore no one formula that is going to end homelessness. Some who are homeless are addicted to drugs or are alcoholics and are in need of treatment. Some are mentally ill and are in serious need of medical attention. But whatever the root cause(s), homelessness is a serious issue challenging our communities and it is one that requires serious attention.

You too can help this week. I’ve listed a few links below:
